NAKED REALITY:- A Texas mom used public records to show Americans which companies profit from ICE. The Trump administration listed her website in an intelligence bulletin associated with domestic-terrorism threats. Laura Berlin began digging after watching immigrants flown to a Salvadoran prison and wondering who owned the planes, detention centers, and other businesses being paid to carry out deportations. Drawing on her nonprofit communications experience, she created an interactive map that traces ICE contractors across the country, USA TODAY reports. Her research helped fuel a nationwide pressure campaign. Activists organized scores of protests against Citizens Bank after Berlin documented its financing of private-prison giants GEO Group and CoreCivic. Jersey City and Montclair ultimately voted to withdraw a combined $355 million. Citizens later announced it would end lending relationships with the two companies, while insisting the decision was based on commercial circumstances, not activist pressure. Then DHS took notice. A secret February intelligence bulletin specifically highlighted Berlin’s website and warned that information like hers could be used by “anarchist extremists.” DHS categorized the intelligence under the same standing information category previously used for material involving ISIS beheading videos and pipe bombs...even while acknowledging that some of the activity described was protected by the First Amendment, USA TODAY reports. Berlin’s map relies on publicly available information. It now tracks contracts involving companies including AT&T, Comcast, Dell, Deloitte, FedEx, Motorola and Palantir, as well as political contributions from major ICE contractors. For Berlin, it’s also deeply personal. Her two sons are part Guatemalan, and she worries about what increasingly harsh immigration rhetoric could mean for them. She started by following the money. DHS said that was dangerous. If following the money is dangerous, maybe the money is the problem.
