കലിഫോർണിയയിൽ മാസങ്ങൾക്കു മുൻപു മാത്രം ഗവർണർ ഗവിൻ ന്യൂസം വിജ്ഞാപനം ചെയ്ത ദീപാവലി അവധി ഉത്തരവ് കോടതി  റദ്ദാക്കി.  ദീവാളിയുടെ മതപരമായ പ്രാധാന്യം മാത്രമേ ലെജിസ്ളേച്ചർ പാസാക്കിയ  ബില്ലിൽ പറയുന്നുള്ളു എന്ന് ചൂണ്ടിക്കാട്ടിയാണ് ഗവർണർ ഒപ്പു വച്ച നിയമം റദ്ദാക്കിയത്. 

ഹിന്ദു അമേരിക്കൻ ഫൗണ്ടേഷൻ (എച് എ എഫ്) പറയുന്നത് ദീപാവലിയുടെ മതപരമായ പ്രാധാന്യം എടുത്തു കാട്ടിയതിനോടാണ് കോടതിക്ക് എതിർപ്പ് എന്നാണ്. 2025 ഒക്ടോബറിലാണ് ദീപാവലി ഒഴിവുള്ള ഉത്സവമായി അംഗീകരിച്ച മൂന്നാം സംസ്ഥാനമായി കലിഫോർണിയ മാറിയത്.  

ഉത്സവം ആഘോഷിക്കുന്ന ജീവനക്കാർക്ക് അന്നു ശമ്പളത്തോടെ അവധി എടുക്കാം. പബ്ലിക് സ്കൂളുകൾക്കും കമ്മ്യുണിറ്റി കോളജുകൾക്കും വേണമെങ്കിൽ അവധി നൽകുകയും ചെയ്യാം.

കോടതി വിധി കാലിഫോർണിയ നിവാസികളുടെ സാംസ്‌കാരികവും മതപരവുമായ വൈവിധ്യം അംഗീകരിക്കാനുള്ള ഭരണകൂടത്തിന്റെ ശ്രമത്തിനു തിരിച്ചടിയായെന്നു എച് എ എഫ് പറഞ്ഞു. എന്നാൽ അപ്പീൽ പോകുമോ എന്നവർ വ്യക്തമാക്കിയില്ല.

A California judge has overturned the state’s Diwali holiday law.

Last October, Hindu Americans celebrated a historic milestone when California recognized Diwali as an official state holiday, a meaningful step toward acknowledging the traditions and contributions of the state’s Hindu community.

Now, that recognition has been challenged in court.

The ruling focused on the wording of the law describing Diwali’s religious significance, rather than the practical purpose of the holiday: allowing students and employees to observe an important holiday without being forced to choose between their faith and their responsibilities.

HAF is monitoring this lawsuit and will continue supporting Hindu Americans in California as we work to protect the ability of our community to celebrate the holidays that matter.
