In our daily lives, we watch politicians criticizing one another with increasing intensity. Many of these individuals devote enormous amounts of time and energy to public service, often at the expense of their personal comfort and family life. Yet in recent years, the tone of political rhetoric has grown far more extreme, creating an atmosphere in which audiences are encouraged to view those with different political beliefs not simply as opponents, but as enemies. This shift is dangerous—and the evidence is unmistakable. Studies show threats against public officials at the federal, state and local level and political violence in the United States have been rising. Sadly, more Americans now believe violence could be justified under certain political circumstances, a view that was far less common in the past. These trends reflect a broader pattern of polarization. Political disagreements have always existed, and elected officials have always debated, challenged, and opposed one another. But they also once worked across party lines, passed bipartisan legislation, and maintained a basic respect for their colleagues. Historically even during periods of intense ideological conflict, lawmakers frequently collaborated on major national issues—from civil rights legislation to foreign policy to economic reforms. Today, however, a more personal form of hostility has taken root—one that fuels resentment, dehumanization, and, in some cases, unacceptable acts of political violence. This trend cannot continue. Politicians have a responsibility to temper their rhetoric, to model civility, and to help rebuild a healthier political environment for the country. Public trust depends on leaders who can disagree without (not deliberately) encouraging hatred, and who can debate without tearing at the fabric of our shared civic life. When political rhetoric escalates, real people—public servants, community members, and ordinary citizens—face real danger. It is time for leaders to take responsibility and help restore a political culture where disagreement does not lead to dehumanization, and where no American feels threatened for participating in democracy.
