The earliest memory of my father is when he was a professor at St Thomas college, Thrissur and his colleagues were M.P. Paul and Joseph Mundassery.. They lived within walking distance from each other’s home on Palace Road ,East Fort Gate. I remember them going for their evening walk almost every day. They were so patriotic wore cloths made from Indian fabrics only.
At the college they faced some difficulty situation. They were asked to sign a document which stated that they received full salary while in actual case there was a cut in their salary. They wrote a letter to the principal titled History of a cut
which they were planning to publish in the college magazine. The principal called them and asked them either withdraw the letter or resign. The principal also had a grudge to my father because he had written a book called Kerala Catholicar in which he had critized some of the actions of the clergy. One of his students who also happened to be a priest told him privately that what he had written in his book are very true. Rather than tolerate the injustice Paul and Joseph decide to resign. M.P. Paul moved to Ernakulam and stared a tutorial college and my father accepted a job as general manager of a catholic bank in Thrissur. At the bank he set a rule that every employee should report to work at 9am. To his surprise a few lower paid staff was missing. He found it that they were doing some jobs for the directors of the bank.. He made a rule that no director should use bank employees for their personal use.. The directors transferred my father to another branch in the town of Mala. There also he found similar practices and in
desperation he resigned from the bank. He retooled himself by taking a law degree and started practicing law in Thrissur. In the early days of the practice the income generated was not enough to support his family, his widowed mother, his handicapped brother and his wife and widowed sister with two sons. He moved to Ernakulam joined M.P. Paul’s tutorial college as a part time lecturer, bought a printing press and continued his adventurous life. Together with M.P. Paul as coeditor he started a Malayalam magazine called Udayam , promoted young writers to publish their articles in Udayam magazine. The office of the press was a meeting place for young writers to interact with other writers.

This was the time of the World War Two and there was a rumor that Japan might bomb Ernakulam, Since the press was located very close to the water front
he decided to move the press to Thrissur. There also he experienced opposition from the priests who asked the Christian business group not to give any printing jobs to his press. Disappointed by the treatment he received from his own community he sold his press and moved to Delhi seeking for better life.
Because of his various experiences, and legal background he got a job
In the central government to join the team that was writing the Indian Constitution with Dr.Ambedkar as the leader. My father was the first one to
publish a book on Indian Constitution. After he retired he returned to Thrissur and decided to focus on his writing. The first book was biography of Stalin followed by Why Linguistic Provinces in the Indian Union ,Buddhimanmar Undayitum ,Sex and Morals, Ammamarke oru Pusthgam. The last book got an award from Ke4ala Sahithya Academy,

My father visited his children in New York several times and was so involved in following American Politics.. He was invited by the Social Science department of my college which is a unit of the City University to give a talk on India and the students were so impressed by the simplistic way he was able to make them understand the complex history of India
My father’s life is an example of how one can face so many challenges in life without bitterness and charity for all. With discipline and hard work one can achieve a lot in life.
