Bangalore Days – Review: Excellent – One of the best Malayalam movies !

This is an Indian Malayalam movie, released less than a month ago, on the 30th of May, 2014,  written and directed by Anjali Menon, produced by Anwar Rasheed and Sophia Paul and music by Gopi Sunder.  The cast consists of Dulquer Salmaan, Fahadh Faasil, Nivin Pauly, Nazriya Nazim, Parvathy Menon, Isha Talwar and Nithya Menon .

The theme mainly is about the hypocrisies of our conservative and orthodox society and baseless beliefs, customs and traditions and as a result everyone is suffering and unhappy, being unable to live a life of their choice and liking.  Most parents impose their beliefs and dreams on their own children, try to live their dram life through their children, much against the will and wishes of their children causing the children to confuse and suffer, as the children are reluctant to displease their parents and family.

The film's story revolves around three cousins Arjun (Dulquer), Kuttan (Nivin Pauly) and Divya (Nazriya Nazim),who share a close bond since their childhood. Kuttan is a software engineer who is depressed at being away from home and family, while Arjun is a bike mechanic who lives life on his own terms. Divya gets married to a workaholic corporate executive, Das (Fahadh Faasil).  Their childhood dream was to leave Kerala one day for Bangalore and have a blast !  All three of them had to leave Kerala and end up in Bangalore for various reasons.  In Bangalore, Arjun meets Sarah (Parvathy), a physically handicapped radio jockey on wheel chair and falls in love with her. Kuttan meets Meenakshi (Isha Talwar), an air hostess during a flight journey.  Eventually, they decide to come to terms with their own destiny, overcome their family’s interference, turn things around and all end up living a happy life.

Anjali Menon has done a fantastic job as director.

There are 5 songs.  They were all just about good.  The photography, the screen play, audio, script, etc. were all good. The movie is 172 min. long, almost 3 hours.  That Divya and her two cousins (grown up men in their upper 20s) dancing madly wild, hugging and cuddling, the evening before her wedding looked a little unreal.  It looked even more unreal that the two men slept with her together on her bed in her room all cuddling together, the night before her wedding !  Also, a little more Bangalore factors could have been incorporated to fit the name and the story.

Nazriya Nazim ( Divya) presented a fantastic show much contrary to my expectation. Nivin Pauly, though very good looking, just about did justice to his role.  For his personality, however, this is an ideal role, though he needs to polish his acting skills a bit more.  Dulquer (Aju) also barely made it !  He had an excellent role and with this he could have hit the high note, but he seemed to have serious difficulties in producing the required facial expressions leaving everything to the script, dialogue and the scenes.  All the movies I saw of him so far, his performance seemed to be just average.  Fahad Fazil (Das) presented a fabulous show as usual. Looks like he is the new super star !  All the movies he has acted he has presented an excellent show, with absolute no fail anywhere.  Nitya Menon (Natasha) also presented a great show, though a small role.

Over all, the story, the theme, the dialogue, script, the concept, etc. were fantastic.  The narrative style of the story presentation was very impressive.  All the audience at the end of all the shows were clapping, looks like Anjali Menon has set a new trend !  I have never seen so many people to attend a Malayalam movie, locally.  Felt like almost in Kerala !

This movie’s production cost was Rs. 8.5 crores.  The movie has received an overwhelming response at the box office with a gross collection of  Rs.21 crore by the 12th day of its release and turned out to be a blockbuster.  Bangalore Days is the first film to be released simultaneously in more than 200 screens all over India with English subtitles.

The success and popularity of this is a good proof that a good movie with a revolutionary theme will definitely sell well.  It is always the movie producers and directors who underestimate the standards of the audience, thereby presenting substandard movies and then complain people don’t appreciate it.  The great success of this movie will definitely give Anjali Menon a lot of confidence and let’s hope she will give us many more similar good movies, thus making a bold 90* turn in the Malayalam movie history, liberating the modern youth from the ignorant parents’ virtual cages and thereby contributing heavily to a long overdue social evolution !
