മിനസോട്ട: തമിഴ്‌നാട് പുരോഹിതന്റെ ലൈഗിക പീഡനത്തില്‍ മിനസോട്ടയില്‍ നിന്നുള്ള വനിത 75,000 ഡോളര്‍ നഷ്ടപരിഹാരം ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ട് ഊട്ടി രൂപതയ്‌ക്കെതിരെ കേസ് ഫയല്‍ ചെയ്തു. മെഗന്‍ പീറ്റേഴ്‌സണ്‍ ആണ് പരാതിക്കാരി. ഇവരുടെ അറ്റോര്‍ണി ജെഫ് ആന്റേഴ്‌സണ്‍ മുഖേന ഏപ്രില്‍ 18നാണ് ഊട്ടി രൂപതയ്‌ക്കെതിരെ ഹര്‍ജി കൊടുത്തിരിക്കുന്നത്.

റവ. ജോസഫ് പളനിവേല്‍ ജെയപോളാണ് എതിര്‍ കക്ഷി. മിനസോട്ടയില്‍ വൈദികനായി സേവനമനുഷ്ഠിക്കുന്ന കാലത്ത് 2004 മുതല്‍  റവ. ജോസഫ് പളനിവേല്‍, മെഗന്‍ പീറ്റേഴ്‌സനെ പീഡിപ്പിച്ചിരുന്നുവെന്നും അക്കാലത്ത് മെഗന് 15 വയസില്‍ താഴെ മാത്രമേ പ്രായമുണ്ടായിരുന്നുള്ളുവെന്നും ഹര്‍ജിയില്‍ ചൂണ്ടിക്കാട്ടുന്നു. മിനസോട്ടയിലെ ഗ്രീന്‍ ബുഷ് പള്ളിയിലെ വൈദികനായിരുന്നു അന്ന് ജെയപോള്‍.

പീറ്റേഴ്‌സന്റെ വെളിപ്പെടുത്തലിനെ തുടര്‍ന്ന് ഇന്ത്യയിലേക്കു കടന്നു കളഞ്ഞ വൈദികനെ പിന്നീടു അമേരിക്കയിലേക്കു തിരിച്ചുകൊണ്ടു വരികയായിരുന്നു. ജെയപോള്‍ പീഡന കേസില്‍ കുറ്റക്കാരനാണെന്ന് കഴിഞ്ഞ വര്‍ഷം കോടതി വിധിച്ചു. എന്നാല്‍ ക്രൂക്‌സ്ടണ്‍ രൂപതയുടെ ഒരു ഒത്തുതീര്‍പ്പ് വ്യവസ്ഥയില്‍ മെഗന്‍ പീറ്റേഴ്‌സണ്‍ പരാതി പിന്‍വലിക്കുകയുണ്ടായി.

ഊട്ടി രൂപതയില്‍പ്പെട്ടയാളാണ് ജെയപോള്‍. അതേസമയം ബിഷപ്പ് വത്തിക്കാനുമായി സംസാരിച്ച് ജെയപോളിന്റെ സസ്‌പെന്‍ഷന്‍ പിന്‍വലിപ്പിച്ചു. ഫെബ്രുവരിയിലായിരുന്നു ഇത്. ഇക്കാര്യമറിഞ്ഞ മെഗന്‍ പീറ്റേഴ്‌സണ്‍ വാര്‍ത്താസമ്മേളനം വിളിച്ചുകൂട്ടി ജെയപോളിനെതിരെ വീണ്ടും ശക്തമായ ആരോപണവുമായി രംഗത്തുവരികയായിരുന്നു. 

മെഗന്റെ വക്കീല്‍ വിശദീകരണം തേടിയതിനെ തുടര്‍ന്ന് ഇക്കാര്യത്തില്‍ തങ്ങളുടെ അഭിഭാഷകരുമായി ആശയവിനിമയം നടത്താതെ പ്രതികരിക്കില്ലെന്നാണ് ഊട്ടി രൂപത അധികൃതരുടെ നിലപാട്. കേസില്‍ ഫെഡറല്‍ കോടതിക്ക് ദൂരപരിധിയുണ്ടെങ്കിലും ജെയപോള്‍ മിനസോട്ടയില്‍ ജോലിയചെയ്തതിനാല്‍ ഊട്ടി രൂപത വിശദീകരണം നല്‍കണമെന്നാണ് അറ്റോര്‍ണി ചൂണ്ടിക്കാട്ടുന്നത്.

A Minnesota woman is seeking damages of more than $75,000 from an Indian diocese in Southern India for reassigning a priest who she had accused of molesting her as a young teenager.

Megan Peterson filed a lawsuit April 18, against Ootacamund Diocese in Tamil Nadu, Associated Press reported. Her attorney Jeff Anderson indicated the case was filed because the diocese reassigned Rev. Joseph Palanivel Jeyapaul in February to another post despite his conviction for sexual abuse in Minnesota. Peterson said she was assaulted by the priest starting in 2004 when she was just 14 or 15. At that time Jeyapaul was the priest at her church in Greenbush, Minnesota.

“This is not only shocking, it’s a total break of the pledge Pope Francis has made that he will not return to the practices of the past,” Anderson is quoted saying in the news report.

Jeyapaul fled the U.S. when he was accused by Peterson in the earlier case, but was extradited to face trial and spent 3 years in jail fighting the extradition and the allegations. Last year, Jeyapaul pleaded guilty to molesting one child. In a plea deal, Peterson dropped charges and along with the unnamed second victim, reached a settlement with the Diocese of Crookston, Minnesota.

Officials from the Ootacamund Diocese told Associated Press they could not comment until they had consulted their lawyers. At an April 19 news conference Peterson said she felt “abused, degraded and re-victimized all over again” when she came to know that Bishop Arulappan Amalraj lifted Jeyapaul’s suspension in February following consultations with the Vatican.

“Children deserve to be protected in India and nobody is doing this at this point,” Peterson is quoted saying. Her lawyer placed the blame for his client’s anguish squarely at the door of the Ootacamund Diocese. But he conceded that even though U.S. federal courts had jurisdiction in the case because Jeyapaul worked in Minnesota, it would be hard to administer a judgment if any damages are imposed on the Indian diocese in the latest suit.
