NYC man faces attempted murder charge in Yonkers

YONKERS – A 24-year-old man was in police custody Saturday accused of stabbing a Hillbright Terrace man numerous times in the head, neck and face.

The 55-year-old victim remained in critical but stable condition at an area hospital. Arrested in the connection with the attack was Oscar Perez of New York City, police said.

Officers found the 55-year-old, whose name was not released, after responding to reports of a violent dispute at an apartment on Hillbright Terrace about 10:40 p.m. Friday, Yonkers police Detective Lt. Patrick McCormack said.

"Detectives immediately began an investigation and determined that this was not a random incident," McCormack said in a statement.

Investigators believe Perez went to the home in order to speak with a woman who lives there. The 55-year-old answered the door and refused to let Perez inside. Perez is accused of using a ladder to enter the apartment through a rear window. That's when police say the attack occurred.

"The suspect became involved in a physical altercation with the 55-year-old victim, who was stabbed several times by the suspect," McCormack said.

A Yonkers police crime scene unit began work at the apartment late Friday while detectives conducted an extensive search for the attacker, who had driven away before officers arrived, authorities said.

At 3 a.m. Saturday, Perez walked into the New York City Police Department's 102nd Precinct on 118th Street in Queens and turned himself in, McCormack said. Yonkers police later took custody of Perez.

The 24-year-old is accused of attempted murder, first-degree assault and burglary, McCormack said. He was held at Yonkers City Jail on Saturday evening and was expected to appear in city court Sunday for arraignment.

Anyone who may have witnessed the attack or who may have information regarding the case is urged to contact Yonkers police at 914-377-7724.
