SILVER JUBILEE CELEBRATION OF KAROOR SOMAN
Well known novelist and journalist Karoor Soman commemorated his Silver Jubilee in his home town at Charumoodu/Thamarakulam. During his 25 years in the literary field, he has written over 25 books which include different forms of literature namely drama, novel, story, poem, travelogue, articles, sports and science, which have been published by reputable publishers in Kerala. From his high school years, he started writing dramas and poems for competition purposes. His first poem was published in Balarama and his radio drama ‘Karmegham’ and ‘Curtainidu’ was telecasted by Trivandrum and Thrissur radio stations in 1972/1973.

This jubilee function was chaired by well known children’s author, Sippy Pallipuram and inaugurated by well known novelist, K.L.Mohanavarma. Sippy Pallipuram had fulsome praise for the mammoth efforts of Karoor’s four decades of literary contributions to Malayalam literature and said, “The works are not confined to Kerala but to people across the world”.  Sippy Pallipuram, also said “Writers like Karoor are a necessity of our times and he stands tall among Keralite litterateurs”.
In his opening speech, K L Mohanavarma said, “Alapuzzha is blessed to have many illustrious writers over its history and Karoor is on that same path as his notable predecessors. We have very few writers who are as versatile as Karoor.” He opined that Karoor’s Olympic history book published by SPCS in 2012 can be hailed as one of its kind. Mohanavarma also presented Sahitya Poshini literary award to Karoor Soman in this meeting. His novel ‘Kaumara sandhyagal’, published by Current Books  was released by Mohanavarma to Vishwam Padanillam and his poem collections ‘Kadalas’ published by SPCS was also released by Mohanavarma to Chunnakara Janardhanan Nair.

In his speech, Karoor said, ‘Destitute people in Kerala are facing a critical situation to which the writers in the state are turning a blind eye. Such writers have their minds focussed on money, positions and awards instead of taking a stand for the issues that face the community. Their focus has shifted from helping and supporting the cause for freedom and right of other humans to exaggerating one’s own pride and arrogance.  Even governmental literary awards are based on political influences and mutual consent between certain groups. Writers who are truly passionate about literature and contribute to literature are not even considered for these awards. In Kerala and outside India, books are being published by extremely covetous people. Such people should understand that they do not achieve anything in the literary field and instead are aiding the cheap publishers. The Kerala government and the literary representatives do not appreciate the pravasi writers and this is truly an injustice to Malayalam literature. Pravasi writers should be given more attention and should be considered for their contributions. Indian democracy is also at its last breath. All jobs have a certain qualification and only in Indian politics there is no age limit or qualification required. The political party leaders have no qualifications and they hold on to their power till they die. This is wrong, unfair and leads to injustice. The new generation should change this corrupt bureaucratic system.’

Karoor Soman’s poems were recited by Kattanam Omanakuttan, Kuttipuram Goplalan, Stephy Stephen, Sneha Padbanaban, Vallikunam G Gananathan. School students staged their musical programmes and the convenor, R Chellappan presented the vote of thanks.
