I am an independent. I have often wondered why Jesus did not start a political movement to save the world. I’ve worried that if I aligned myself with the correct side politically, it would be too easy to demonize the people God calls me to love and excuse myself from the daily, hidden, costly moments of grace-giving. As I consider my candidate choices, there is one question I try to answer as carefully and honestly as I can. Who is more closely following the Greatest Commandment to love God by loving our neighbors as ourself? Do I see the fruits of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness and self-control in their decision making? According to scripture’s definition of love, I will be able to tell if this a person who loves their neighbor by (again) their patience and kindness. They will be a person who is not proud or rude or self-seeking, keeps no record of wrongs, and delights with the truth. I am a Christian who voted for Biden. In Biden I see a leader who has allowed life’s losses to soften him with a compassionate response, the humility to admit his shortcomings, thoughtful attention to policy, a faithful husband and father. He does not confuse bullying with strength but instead recognizes the courage it will take to reach across the aisle to unify our nation. My friends who are Trump supporters, you are people I care deeply about. Many of you I’m remembering as the faces that brought meals to my family when my little brother was shot in a gun accident and who brought gifts to my wedding. The most controversial and compelling thing about following the way of Jesus is that EVERY person deserves to be treated with the sacred dignity they have been created with. At the core, it is our President’s consistent lack of ability to do this that troubles me most. To EVERY marginalized person who has felt diminished by the current administration, and to those who have painfully experienced how this President’s leadership has literally changed the shape of their lives, I’ve cast my ballot with your cherished significance on my mind.
