An Appraisal of A Biography (Dr. Alexander Jacob IPS)

Last week, I read the book, “Anugrahathinte Akshara Varshangal” (Mal.), the life story of Fr. Thomas Kuzhinapurath. It is interesting that I read the book in one go, in about four hours. Any Biography shall have the following aspects in it:
Birth and upbringing of the person
The sayings and speeches of the person
The written materials by the person
The ideals held by the person
The actions of the person, which we can imitate or emulate
This biography satisfies all the above parts.
The book give a graphic description of Omallur and Cheekkanal, the birth place of Fr. Thomas Kuzhinapurath. Omallur is an ancient silk manufacturing town, connected or mentioned in Sangam literature namely “Pathittu Pattu”of 5th Century AD. He was born in a family which belong to Pakalomattam Tharavadu to which my family also belong ie. Thumpamon Vadakkedath family. Rev. Fr. John Kuzhinapurath OIC the priest who became one among the five, who reunited to Catholic Church along with Archbishop Mar Ivanios on September 20, 1930, was his paternal granduncle. In my young school days I was an altar boy to Fr. John Kuzhinapurath OIC at Nalanchira Bethany Ashram Church from 1963 to 1967. Hence we are closely linked in our life. Fr. Thomas Kuzhinapurath studied in Arya Bharathi School, Omallur, where my father Late Mr. P T Jacob, was the first Headmaster after MSC Management purchased it. His seminary days and spiritual development into Philosophical and Theological studies is interesting. His Higher Studies in Rome is also well discussed. Hence the first part is well described.
The second part of this book is a collection of five travelogues of Fr. Thomas Kuzhinapurath. Journeys to Holy Land, France, USA, South Africa and Rome are beautifully pictured here. Fr. Thomas is a good photographer, as evidenced from Part 3, “Ormakalude Chithrasala” . It is a rewarding area of the Book to see and read.
The written materials of Fr. Thomas is critically evaluated in Part 4 of the book, “Sahitya Saprya”. Analysis by Late Dr. Babu Paul and Dr. M V Thomas are excellent. A list of his contributions in literary field is given in pages 303-307. It makes good reading.
He was lucky to have prestigious postings like chancellor of Trivandrum Archdiocese, Judicial Vicar and Vice President of the Ordinary Tribunal of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church etc. in a very younger age. His performance in each of the posts is appreciable.
He shares a personal experience of his visit to my ancestral Home in Thumpamon, when he accompanied His Beatitude Moran Mor Baselios Cleemis Cardinal for the Rededication of the “Illam” in page 177 and 178. My family inherits the 850year oid “Illam”, the traditional homes of Brahmin Nampoothiris. Many Hindus never believe that Christians had “Illams” in Kerala. So we decided to renovate the “Illam” and rededicate it as a Prayer House. So we invited our beloved Cardinal Baselios Cleemis, who also like me and Fr. Kuzhinapurath belong to Pakalomattam Tharavadu to bless the Prayer House on 2019 October 7, during our Kudumbayogam. We also invited Bishop Cleemis, the Orthodox Bishop of Thumpamon Diocese to bless the occasion. Cardinal came and along with Orthodox Bishop entered in Thumpamon Orthodox Cathedral and prayed together and created history. Fr. Kuzhinapurath accompanied our Cardinal and was a speaker in the meeting, representing Pakalomattam Tharavadu. I personally thank him for referring this visit in this book.
Though I read the book in one go, I went back again to read Chapter 10 on Theological Training and Chapter 12 on Canon Law Studies. Chapter 13 on his Research in Rome also attracted me. The commentary on “Salvific Law” by Dr. Babu Paul also was very good.
At the age of 51 Fr. Thomas Kuzhinapurath have many productive decades, ahead of him. His work with Journalism also is an area of expectation. I wish and pray that in the years to come, his services, to which Laity and Greater Humanity will be noteworthy for another Biography in the fag end of life. My Best wishes for the same. I pray to almighty God, for blessing him in all his endeavours in the future
