സാമൂഹ്യ മാധ്യമങ്ങളില്‍ പ്രവാസികളെക്കുറിച്ചും പ്രവാസികള്‍ താമസിക്കുന്ന രാജ്യങ്ങളെക്കുറിച്ചും പ്രതേകിച്ചും അമേരിക്കയെക്കുറിച്ചും വരുന്ന പോസ്റ്ററുകളും പോസ്റ്റുകളും തമാശയല്ലാത്ത തമാശകളും കണ്ടു മനം മടുത്താണ് ഞാന്‍ ഇതു എഴുതുന്നത്. വിശുദ്ധ ലൂക്കോസിന്റെ സുവിശേഷം 15 )o അധ്യായം 11 മുതല്‍ 32 വരെയുള്ള വാക്യങ്ങളെ അടിസ്ഥാനമാക്കിയുള്ള മുടിയനായ പുത്രന്റെ ഉപമയുടെ പാരഡി ആയി എഴുതിയ കോവിഡിയനായ പുത്രന്റെ ഉപമ എന്ന കളിയാക്കുന്ന കഥ എന്നെ ഏറ്റവും അധികം വേദനിപ്പിച്ചു. അതുപോലെ വേറെ ഒരുപാടു കഥകളും കളിയാക്കലുകളും.
ഞാന്‍ 1951 ല്‍ കേരളത്തില്‍ ജനിച്ച ഒരാളാണ്. ഞാന്‍ വളരുമ്പോഴത്തെ കേരളത്തെക്കുറിച് ഇപ്പോഴത്തെ തലമുറയിലെ ആര്‍ക്കും ഒരു ഗ്രാഹ്യവും ഇല്ല. കാരണം ഇപ്പോഴത്തെ കേരളത്തിലെ തലമുറ സുഭിക്ഷതയില്‍ വളര്‍ന്നവരാണ്. അവരുടെ അറിവിന് വേണ്ടി ചില കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ പറഞ്ഞുകൊള്ളട്ടെ.
ഞങ്ങള്‍, എന്റെ പ്രായക്കാരും എനിക്ക് മുന്പുണ്ടായിരുന്നവരും വളര്‍ന്ന കേരളം ഒരു പാവപ്പെട്ട കേരളം ആയിരുന്നു. മിക്ക ആളുകള്‍ക്കും ജോലി ഇല്ല. അവര്‍ക്കുള്ള വസ്തുവില്‍ കൃഷി ചെയ്തു അതില്‍ നിന്നു കിട്ടുന്ന ഫലം കൊണ്ട് ഉപജീവനം കഴിക്കുന്നവരായിരുന്ന മിക്ക ആളുകളും. മിച്ചം ഉള്ളത് ചന്തയില്‍ കൊടുത്തു് കിട്ടുന്ന പണം കൊണ്ട് മറ്റു അത്യവശ്യ സാധനങ്ങളും വാങ്ങിക്കും.
സ്വന്തമായി വസ്തു ഇല്ലാത്ത ഒത്തിരി പേരുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. അവര്‍ മറ്റുള്ള ജന്മികളുടെ വസ്തു ഒറ്റക്കൊ പാട്ടത്തിനോ എടുത്തു അതില്‍ കൃഷി ചെയ്തു ഒരു ഭാഗം ജന്മിക്കു കൊടുത്തിട്ടു ബാക്കികൊണ്ട് ഉപജീവനം കഴിച്ചു വന്നു
കുറേ ആളുകള്‍ കച്ചവടക്കാരായി. സാധാരണ കടയില്‍ ഇരുന്നുള്ള കച്ചവടം അല്ല. രാവിലെ ചേളാവും ത്രാസും ചാക്കും എടുത്തു ഓരോ വീട് കയറി ഇറങ്ങി കുരുമുളകും, പാക്കും തേങ്ങയും റബ്ബറും മറ്റും വാങ്ങി തലയില്‍ ചുമന്നു കൊണ്ട് നാലഞ്ചു മൈല്‍ നടന്നു ദൂരെയുള്ള വലിയ ചന്തയില്‍ കൊണ്ട് കൊടുത്തു അതില്‍ നിന്ന് കിട്ടുന്ന ലാഭം കൊണ്ട് ഉപജീവനം നടത്തിയിരുന്നു. ചിലപ്പോള്‍ ലാഭത്തിനു പകരം നഷ്ടം വരികയും ചെയ്യും. ചിലര്‍ വെളുപ്പിനെ ദൂരെയുള്ള മീന്‍ കടയില്‍ പോയി ഒരു കുട്ട നിറയെ മീന്‍ വാങ്ങി തലയില്‍ ചുമന്നു കൊണ്ട് 'മത്തി, മത്തി, നാലണക്ക് നൂറു മത്തി അയല അയല അര അണ ' എന്നു വിളിച്ചുകൊണ്ടു ഓരോ വീട്ടിലും വിറ്റ് അതിന്റെ ലാഭം കൊണ്ട് ഉപജീവനം നടത്തി.
ഓരോ വീട്ടിലും ഏഴും എട്ടും മക്കള്‍ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. അവര്‍ക്കു ഉണ്ണാനും ഉടുക്കാനും കൊടുക്കണം. മിക്ക ആളുകള്‍ക്കും ഒരു ജോഡി തുണിയില്ലാതെ വേറൊരു ജോഡി മാറുവാന്‍ ഇല്ലായിരുന്നു.
എട്ടാം ക്ലാസ് മുതല്‍ സ്‌കൂളില്‍ ഫീസ് കൊടുക്കണം. ഒരു മാസം 6 രൂപാ ഫീസ് ആയിരുന്നു. ഈ 6 രൂപാ അന്നൊരു വല്യ സംഖ്യ ആകയാല്‍ അതു സമയത്തിനു കൊടുക്കുവാന്‍ സാധിക്കാതെ ഫൈന്‍ കൊടുത്തു പഠിച്ച ഒട്ടനേകം പേരുണ്ട്. ഒരു വിധത്തില്‍ കഷ്ടപെട്ട് മക്കളെ ഹൈസ്‌കൂള്‍ പാസ്സാക്കിയ മാതാപിതാക്കള്‍ക്ക് തങ്ങളുടെ ആണ് മക്കളെയും പെണ്‍മക്കളെയും വല്യ ഫീസ് കൊടുത്തു കോളേജില്‍ അയക്കാന്‍ കഴിയാതെ വിക്ഷമിച്ചിരുന്നൊരു കാലം. ഹൈ സ്‌കൂള്‍ പാസ്സ് ആയ ഇവര്‍ക്ക് ജോലി കൊടുക്കാന്‍ കഴിയാതിരുന്നൊരു കേരളം. ചിലര്‍ വളരെ പലിശക്ക് കടം എടുത്തു മക്കളെ പ്രീ-ഡിഗ്രി കോഴ്‌സിന് വിട്ടു. പ്രീ-ഡിഗ്രീ പാസ് ആയിട്ടും ജോലി കിട്ടാതെ വിഷമിക്കുന്ന ഒരു വിദ്യാര്‍ത്ഥി വിദ്യാര്‍ത്ഥിനി സമൂഹം. അവരുടെയും അവരുടെ മാതാപിതാക്കളുടെയും വേദനയെക്കുറിച്ചു പറഞ്ഞാല്‍ ഇന്നത്തെ തലമുറയ്ക്ക് മനസ്സില്‍ ആകില്ല.
അങ്ങനെ വിക്ഷമിക്കുമ്പോള്‍ ആണ് മക്കള്‍ ആര്‍മി, എയര്‍ ഫോഴ്സ് മുതലായവയില്‍ ചേര്‍ന്നു. അവിടേയും കേറിപ്പറ്റുക എളുപ്പമായ കാര്യം അല്ലായിരുന്നു. പെണ്‍മക്കള്‍ നഴ്സിംഗ് നും ചേര്‍ന്നു. അക്കാലത്തു നേഴ്‌സിങ്ങിന് പോകുക എന്നത്ഏറ്റവും നാണം കെട്ട കാര്യം ആയിരുന്നു. അല്പം സാമ്പത്തിക ശേഷി ഉള്ള വീടുകളില്‍ നിന്നും നേഴ്‌സിങ്ങിന് വിടാന് മാതാപിതാക്കള്‍ വിസമ്മതിച്ചു. ഒരു ഗതിയും ഇല്ലാത്ത വീടുകളില്‍ നിന്ന് പെണ്‍മക്കള്‍ നേഴ്‌സിങ്ങിന് പോയി.
ഒരു നിമിക്ഷം ചിന്തിക്കുക. 16 ഉം 17 ഉം വയസ്സു മാത്രം പ്രായം ഉള്ള ആണ് മക്കളും പെണ്‍മക്കളും ആണ് ഓരോ വീട്ടില്‍ നിന്നും മിലിട്ടറിയിലും നഴ്സിംഗിനും അവരറിയാത്ത ദൂര ദേശങ്ങളിലേക്കു പോയിട്ടുള്ളത്. അവര്‍ അനുഭവിച്ചിട്ടുള്ള കഷ്ടപ്പാടും പ്രയാസങ്ങളും, നിന്ദയും പരിഹാസങ്ങളും പറഞ്ഞറിയിക്കുന്നതിലും അതീതമാണ്. ഒരു വിധത്തില്‍ അവരതിനെ എല്ലാം തരണം ചെയ്തു. അവര്‍ക്കു കിട്ടിയ ചുരുങ്ങിയ ശമ്പളത്തില്‍ ഒരു നല്ല ഭാഗം വീട്ടിലേക്കു അയച്ചു കൊടുത്തു. അങ്ങനെ ഓരോ വീടിന്റെയും സാഹചര്യം ഉയര്‍ത്തി. അനിയത്തിമാരെയും ആങ്ങളമാരെയും കോളേജില്‍ അയക്കാന്‍ സാധിച്ചു.
അങ്ങനെ ഇരിക്കുമ്പോഴാണ് വിദേശ രാജ്യങ്ങളില്‍ പോകുവാന്‍ സാധാരക്കാര്‍ക്കു അവസരം ഒത്തു വന്നത്. ഗള്‍ഫ് രാജ്യങ്ങളിലേക്ക് ഒത്തിരി തൊഴില്‍ അവസരങ്ങള്‍ വന്നു. അവിടെ ബോസ് ആകാനൊന്നും അല്ല ചാന്‍സ് കിട്ടിയത്. മിക്ക ആളുകള്‍ക്കും കഠിന അധ്വാനം ചെയ്യണ്ട ജോലികള്‍ അത്രേ ലഭിച്ചത്.
നേഴ്സസിനും വിദേശങ്ങളിലേക്ക് അവസരം ലഭിച്ചു. 1970 നോട് അടുത്ത് അമേരിക്കയില്‍ വരുവാനും സാധിച്ചു. ഈ ഇമ്മിഗ്രേഷന്‍ 1976 മാര്‍ച്ച് വരെ നീണ്ടു നിന്നു. നമ്മുടെ അനവധി നേഴ്സസ് അമേരിക്കയില്‍ വരാന്‍ സാധിച്ചു. ആദ്യ കാലങ്ങളില്‍ വന്നവരുടെ പ്രതികൂലങ്ങളും പ്രയാസങ്ങളും പറഞ്ഞറിയിക്കാന്‍ തന്നെ പ്രയാസമാണ്. അപ്പോള്‍ ഒക്കെയും അവര്‍ക്കു വലിയ വലിയ ആഗ്രഹങ്ങള്‍ വീടിനെ കുറിച്ചുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. അപ്പനും അമ്മയ്ക്കും സഹോദരി സഹോദരന്‍ മാര്‍ക്കും നല്ല ഒരു വീടുവച്ചു കൊടുക്കണം. അനിയത്തി മാരെയും ആങ്ങളമാരെയും കോളേജില്‍ പഠിപ്പിക്കണം. പള്ളിക്കു സംഭാവന കൊടുക്കണം. അങ്ങനെ അനേകം അനേകം ആഗ്രഹങ്ങള്‍ . മിക്കവരും അതിനിടയില്‍ വിവാഹിതരായി 5 കൊല്ലം കഴിഞ്ഞപ്പോള്‍ അവരൊക്ക അമേരിക്കന്‍ പൗരത്വം നേടി. അപ്പോള്‍ മേല്‍ പറഞ്ഞ എല്ലാവര്‍ക്കും വേണ്ടി പെറ്റീഷന്‍ ഫയല്‍ ചെയ്തു അവരെ അമേരിക്കയില്‍ കൊണ്ടു വന്നു.
അങ്ങനെ വന്ന സഹോദരി സഹോദര മാരും മറ്റും അമേരിക്കയില്‍ ആദ്യകാലം വന്നവര്‍ അനുഭവിച്ച പ്രയാസത്തെ കുറിച്ച് യാതൊരു അറിവും ഇല്ലാത്തവരായി. അമേരിക്കയില്‍ വരാത്ത സഹോദരി സഹോദരന്‍മാര്‍ക്കും മാതാ പിതാള്‍ക്കും ധാരാളം പണം അയച്ചുകൊടുത്തു. ഈ പണം കൊണ്ട് വളര്‍ന്ന സഹോദരി സഹോദരന്‍മാര്‍ക്കും അവരുടെ മക്കള്‍ക്കും കേരളത്തിലെ പട്ടിണി കാലത്തെ കുറിച്ചോ, തൊഴിലില്ലായ്മയെ കുറിച്ചോ ഒരറിവും ഇല്ലാത്തവരായി സുഭിക്ഷതയില്‍ വളര്‍ന്നു. അങ്ങനെ ഉള്ളവരാണ് അമേരിക്കയെ പരിഹസിക്കുന്നത്. ആദ്യകാലത്തെ ആളുകള്‍ക്ക് അപ്പന്റെ വീട്ടില്‍ സുഭിക്ഷതയോ, അവരെ സ്വീകരിക്കാന്‍ മിക്ക മാതാ പിതാക്കളോ ഇന്ന് ജീവിച്ചിരിപ്പില്ല
പിന്നെ ഇതെഴുതിയ മഹാന്‍ പറഞ്ഞതുപോലെ അമേരിക്കയില്‍ ഇന്നുവരെ പട്ടിണി ഒന്നുമില്ല. കടകളില്‍ എല്ലാ സാധങ്ങളും ലഭ്യമാണ്. ഉദ്ദേശിച്ചതില്‍ അധികം ആളുകള്‍ക്ക് covid 19 ബാധിച്ചു എന്നത് ശരിയാണ്. ഈ സമയത്തു പോലും അമേരിക്കന്‍ ഗവണ്മെന്റ് 29 ലക്ഷം ഡോളര്‍ ഇന്‍ഡ്യ ക്കു covid പ്രതിരോധത്തിനു അനുവദിച്ചു.. അമേരിക്കന്‍ ഗവണ്മെന്റ് ഓരോ കുടുംബത്തിനും 2400 ഡോളര്‍ വച്ച് കൊടുത്തു. കുട്ടികള്‍ ഉള്ളവര്‍ക്ക് 500 ഡോളര്‍ വച്ച് അധികവും കൊടുത്തു. ദൈവകൃപയാല്‍ പാരസറ്റമോള്‍ കഴിച്ചു വയറു നിറക്കണ്ട ഗതികേട് ഇതുവരെ അമേരിക്കയില്‍ ആര്‍ക്കും ഉണ്ടായിട്ടില്ല.
ഒരു കാര്യം കൂടെ ഓര്‍ക്കുക. കേരളത്തിലെ ഇപ്പോഴത്തെ സാമ്പത്തിക സുഭിക്ഷതക്ക് കാരണം പ്രവാസികള്‍ ആണ്. അവര്‍ നിര്‍ലോഭം അയക്കുന്ന ഡോളറും മറ്റു വിദേശ നാണയങ്ങളും കൊണ്ട് സമൃദ്ധി നേടിയ കേരളം. ഒരു ഇന്‍ഡസ്ട്രയോ, തൊഴിലവസരങ്ങളോ ഇല്ലാത്ത കേരളം. ഞങ്ങളുടെ ചെറുപ്പകാലത്തുണ്ടായിരുന്ന FACT, KELTRON തുടങ്ങി അനവധി ഇന്‍ഡസ്ട്രീസ് നശിപ്പിച്ച കേരളം. ഞങ്ങള്‍ക്കാര്‍ക്കും ഒരു ജോലി തരാന്‍ കഴിയാതെ ഇരുന്ന കേരളം. മിക്കവര്‍ക്കും തിരികെ വരാന്‍ യാതൊരു ആഗ്രഹവും ഇല്ല. തിരികെ വന്നാല്‍ എങ്ങനെയാണ് ഞങ്ങളോട് ഇടപെടുന്നതെന്നും നല്ലപോലെ അറിയാം.
ഏപ്രില്‍ 8 നു എന്റെ പ്രിയപ്പെട്ട ഭാര്യ ശ്രിമതി മേരിക്കുട്ടി തോമസ് ( ലീലാമ്മ) ഈ ലോകത്തോട് യാത്ര പറഞ്ഞു. ഒരു സെക്കന്‍ഡ് പോലും ഞാന്‍ ചിന്തിക്കുന്നില്ല കേരളത്തില്‍ ആയിരുന്നെങ്കില്‍ ലീലാമ്മ മരിക്കില്ലായിരുന്നെന്ന്. അത്ര വലിയ ചികില്‍സ സൗകര്യം ഉള്ള സ്ഥലം കേരളവും ഇന്‍ഡ്യയും ആണെങ്കില്‍ എന്തിനു പിണറായി വിജയനും, കോടിയേരിയും ഉമ്മന്‍ ചാണ്ടിയും സോണിയ ഗാന്ധിയും മറ്റു പലരും അമേരിക്കയില്‍ ചികിത്സക്ക് വന്നു. ഷൈലജ ടീച്ചറിന്റെ പ്രഗല്ഭമായ ചികിത്സ നടത്തിയാല്‍ പോരായിരുന്നോ?
എന്റെ പ്രവാസി മലയാളികളോട് എനിക്കൊരു അപേക്ഷയുണ്ട്. കോവിഡിയനായ പുത്രന്റെ ഉപമ പോലെ നമ്മളെ കളിയാക്കുന്ന പോസ്റ്റിംഗ്സ് ദയവായി forward ചെയ്യരുത്. നിങ്ങളില്‍ പലര്‍ക്കും ഞങ്ങളുടെ വേദന അറിയില്ല. കാരണം നിങ്ങള്‍ വന്നതു ചേട്ടന്റെയും ചേച്ചിയുടെയും സൗകര്യ പ്രദമായ വീടുകളിലേക്കാണ്. ഞങ്ങള്‍ കേരളം വിട്ട സാഹചര്യത്തില്‍ അല്ല. ഞങ്ങള്‍ ഇവിടെ വന്ന സാഹചര്യത്തിലും അല്ല. ഞങ്ങളെ വെറുതെ വേദനിപ്പിക്കരുതേ!

I tried to to come to this country I used many tools. First I tried to get as student visa, for that I have to pass English test plus I do not have a valid education certificate. Agent offered to send Canada,for that need a lot of money. An agent arranged an American spouse. but I am already married. finally I agrred to marry an American girl , got married came this country after getting green card divorce her. what an easy way to come to USA

Very good message. Please publish in Manorama/Mathrubhumi, etc so the people in Kerala will also read. What is said, is the truth, but tip of the iceberg, but who cares, they want our money only, go to Kerala and see they will charge twice from us, and yet our love for the land we were born is dear to us and that is the only reason I go. As I wrote before, jealousy is the only reason compelling to rebuke us.

P T Thomas is my cousin. I agree with most of the narrations of the article and I saw all readers have positive comments. I have a different view of the Prodigal son's parody. First of all this has nothing to do with the immigrants of U.S.A. There are lot of people in middle east they stuck in their labor camp, have no food or no where to go. And in Kerala now government is providing peoples needs very effectively. Even the workers from other states, we call them 'Bengalies', have plenty of everything. It is quiet natural for those people in the Middle East to think like Prodigal son, when they see the 'Bengalis" live in such a good situation and they are suffering. The parody is just a creativity and nothing to make any Indian Americans feel bad.
This is just my opinion.

Very interesting historical lesson for the affluent current generation to open their eyes towards the past reality of painful days suffered by the 99% of the people of Kerala before 1970. As Bro. Thomas had stated, many had only one shirt in those days. I was born in 1945, since my father was an Homeopathic doctor, I didn't suffer much agony like many neighbors of my age suffered. Came to the dreamland U.S. in 1971 as a student, no relatives to help; then I had to suffer hunger, totally empty pocket many times, helpless and nowhere to look for other than looking up to GOD. Besides, cultural-climatic and mental agony of depression. Indeed, through that struggling days of life, I could realize far deeply that there is a GOD who is guiding my paths with divine signals.
