IRVINE – A 39-year-old man who called police to tell them he had killed his wife has been arrested, authorities said.
Shalabh Rastogi was booked into Men's Central Jail on Tuesday morning in connection with the death of his wife, who authorities have identified as Jalina George, 40.
Rastogi called dispatchers about 9:40 p.m. Monday to tell them he killed his wife earlier in the day, said Lt. Julia Engen of the Irvine Police Department.
Officers arrived at the couple's apartment on Monte Vista and took Rastogi into custody without incident, police said.
Inside, officers found the body of Rastogi's wife.
Rastogi, who according to court records works in finance, has been cooperative with investigators, officials said.
Investigators suspect Rastogi killed George, his wife of 13 years, after an argument, but officials would not expand on the details of the disagreement Tuesday.
Police say the couple had been living in the apartment for eight months with their three children.
The children were at a "scheduled extracurricular activity" when the argument took place, Engen said. They were taken into protective custody after their mother's death.
"When we took them into custody, they had no idea there had been an incident," Engen said.
Authorities said there is no indication that a weapon was used.
Coroner's officials Tuesday confirmed that the death has officially been ruled a homicide.
An autopsy was completed, but authorities declined to release the cause of George's death until criminal charges are filed.
It is the first homicide reported in Irvine this year.
George had been a senior clinical data manager at Allergan. The Facebook page of her husband, Shalabh Rastogi, confirms that it is him and their three children delivering the video Mother's Day message at the bottom of this page to George in May 2011, around the time she joined the Irvine-based pharmaceutical giant.
George's tweets are very cryptic and/or philosophical.
