This is the time we could be stronger! (Paul D Panakal)
I write this after seeing multiple articles and series of discussions in response to them where negative emotions superseded human connectedness.

I am a registered nurse in New York.  I do not directly provide care to COVID patients.  Still every day, I interact with individual patients.  Some among them develop symptoms and get tested with COVID positive results.  I move around in an environment where these individuals have been sneezing, coughing and leaving droplets in the air.  Every day, I interact with nurses and doctors that directly treating patients.  At least few of them developed symptoms and tested positive for COVID. We, the nurses, doctors and members of other disciplines working in hospital are not staying back home.  It is our job to be there to receive people that become ill.  It is our job to care for them and provide treatment to their recovery and well-being, regardless of what kind of illness they have or they come with.  When we are with our patients, we do not think about our well-being, but plan on what we do and do what we plan with the hope of best outcome.  We feel better when our patients feel better, we smile when they get ready for discharge to their loved ones. We get anxious when we do not see progress in our patients’ conditions; we get panic and worried, but maintain calmness when patients have emergencies; and we cry deep in our minds when an individual loses the fight with illness.

We know that the toll COVID takes is already in an unprecedented level.  They say that the worst is yet to come in the weeks ahead.  We see families that are grieving from the loss of their loved ones.  We are sad that many families were not even able to say good bye; not even able to bury the remains; not even able to be present at the crematorium. We hear stories that make us helpless; make us depressed.

This is the time we need to care for others in the human race; this is the time we express our empathy and concern to others; this is the time we support each other; we set aside our differences; this is the time we disregard the ups and downs of fellow communities, societies, and geographic strengths and weaknesses or economic disparities.

Let’s all be empathetic; show our positive emotions and show the good side of our personalities and let’s bring our people and communities together.  Be safe and be mindful of what we touch, where we stand and what we breathe and maintain the social/physical distance for others to protect ourselves and to protect others; thus let us help save lives.
