ന്യൂയോര്‍ക്ക്: അമേരിക്കന്‍ കോണ്‍ഗ്രസിലെ ആദ്യ ഹിന്ദു അംഗമായ തുള്‍സി ഗബ്ബാര്‍ഡുമായി പ്രധാനമന്ത്രി നരേന്ദ്രമോദി കൂടിക്കാഴ്ച നടത്തി. ഐക്യ രാഷ്ട്രസഭയുടെ ജനറല്‍ അസംബ്ലിക്കിടെയായിരുന്നു മോദിയുടെ അപ്രതീക്ഷിത കൂടിക്കാഴ്ച. വരുന്ന അമേരിക്കന്‍ പ്രസിഡന്റ് തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പില്‍ ഡെമോക്രാറ്റിക്ക് സ്ഥാനാര്‍ഥിയായി മത്സരിക്കുമെന്ന് പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ചിട്ടുള്ള വ്യക്തികൂടിയാണ് തുള്‍സി.
സെപ്തംബര്‍ 22 ന് ഹൂസ്റ്റണില്‍ നടന്ന ഹൗഡി മോദി പരിപാടിയില്‍ പങ്കെടുക്കാന്‍ കഴിയാത്തതില്‍ തുള്‍സി ഗബ്ബാര്‍ഡ് ഖേദപ്രകടനം നടത്തിയിരുന്നു. ഹൗഡി മോദി പരിപാടിയില്‍ അമേരിക്കന്‍ പ്രസിഡന്റ് ട്രംപിനെ വീണ്ടും തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കാന്‍ മോദി ആഹ്വാനം ചെയ്തിരുന്നു. ഇതിന് പിന്നാലെയാണ് ഡൊമോക്രാറ്റ് നേതാവുമായി മോദിയുടെ കൂടിക്കാഴ്ച.
ഹിന്ദുവായതിന്റെ പേരില്‍ ഏതാനും മാധ്യമങ്ങള്‍ തന്നെ മനഃപൂര്‍വം ലക്ഷ്യമിടുന്നുണ്ടെന്ന് തുള്‍സി ഈയിടെ വെളിപ്പെടുത്തിയിരുന്നു. അമേരിക്കയിലെ ഹിന്ദുക്കള്‍ക്കെതിരേ അവര്‍ അടിസ്ഥാനമില്ലാത്ത ആരോപണങ്ങളുന്നയിക്കുകയാണ്. പ്രധാനമന്ത്രി നരേന്ദ്രമോദിയുമായി താന്‍ നടത്തിയ കൂടിക്കാഴ്ചയാണ് ഇതിനുള്ള തെളിവായി അവര്‍ ഉയര്‍ത്തിക്കാട്ടുന്നത്. എന്നാല്‍ മറ്റ് അമേരിക്കന്‍ നേതാക്കളും മോദിയുമായി കൂടിക്കാഴ്ച നടത്തുകയും അദ്ദേഹത്തിനൊപ്പം പ്രവര്‍ത്തിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ട്.
യു.എസ്. കോണ്‍ഗ്രസിലെ ആദ്യഹിന്ദു അംഗമായതില്‍ അഭിമാനമുണ്ട്. ഇപ്പോള്‍ യു.എസ്. പ്രസിഡന്റ് സ്ഥാനത്തേക്കും മത്സരിക്കുമെന്ന് തുള്‍സി വ്യക്തമാക്കിയിരുന്നു. ഇന്ത്യ ഏഷ്യയിലെ അമേരിക്കയുടെ ഏറ്റവും അടുത്ത സഖ്യരാഷ്ട്രമാണെന്നും ലോകത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും നിര്‍ണായക രാജ്യങ്ങളിലൊന്നായി ഇന്ത്യ വളരുകയാണെന്നും തുള്‍സി അഭിപ്രായപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നു. 37 വയസ്സുകാരിയായ തുള്‍സി ഗബ്ബാര്‍ഡ് കഴിഞ്ഞ ജനുവരി 11 നാണ് പ്രസിഡന്റ് തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പില്‍ മത്സരിക്കുന്ന കാര്യം പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ചത്.

Washington (CNN)Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell urged the White House to release the rough transcript of the phone call between President Donald Trump and the Ukrainian president to back up Trump's claim that there was nothing improper with the call, according to a source familiar with the conversation.
The Washington Post first reported McConnell's involvement.
The White House on Wednesday released the rough transcript of the July 25 phone call between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, a day after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced a formal impeachment inquiry into Trump related to the matter. The call summary showed that Trump asked Zelensky to investigate a potential 2020 political rival, Joe Biden, and his son, Hunter.
There is no evidence of wrongdoing by either Joe or Hunter Biden.

The rough transcript led Democrats to accuse Trump of a quid pro quo, after media reports on Monday revealed Trump froze nearly $400 million in military aid to Ukraine days ahead of his call with Zelensky.
Top Democrats concluded the call summary showed clear evidence of Trump pressuring a foreign leader for political advantage.
Trump denied any wrongdoing and argued that the call summary showed there was no direct quid pro quo — an argument that was echoed by his Republican allies

LONG BEFORE THE Indian strongman Narendra Modi became prime minister of the world’s largest democracy, he was a prominent leader of the Hindu right. He rose as a public figure through the nationalist organization Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, or RSS, whose ideology includes a desire to carve out a Hindu nation in which Muslims and Christians are considered second-class citizens. It was a well-known activist who once had links to the RSS who assassinated Mahatma Gandhi, accusing him of appeasing Muslims during the bloody partition of the Indian subcontinent.
That anti-Muslim sentiment has been a major driving force of Modi’s political career in the Bharatiya Janata Party, or BJP. In 2002, when Modi was chief minister of the state of Gujarat, he oversaw an outbreak of violence by Hindu nationalists against the minority Muslim population that resulted in the deaths of more than 1,000 people. Local and international fact-finding groups accused Modi of complicity in the killings, charging that he did not do enough to contain the violence. Indian courts eventually exonerated him for a lack of evidence, but his image was pilloried. The United Kingdom and some European countries refused to deal with him and in 2005, the United States barred him from entering the country.
Modi’s ascent has normalized nationalist rhetoric, the silencing of dissent, and violence against religious minorities in India — and it’s also had global implications. Elected prime minister in 2014, he was one of the first of a class of populist autocrats who’ve risen to power in recent years. That group includes Egypt’s Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who was elected in the same month as Modi; Turkey’s Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who’s been in office for more than a decade but has been increasingly consolidating power; Rodrigo Duterte of the Philippines, whose war on drugs has killed thousands of people; Brazil’s Jair Bolsonaro, who was elected in October despite his pro-military dictatorship stance; and, of course, America’s Donald Trump.
In the United States, Modi’s reputation has been helped by a group of Hindu-American supporters with links to the RSS and other Hindu nationalist organizations, who’ve been working in tandem with a peculiar congressional ally: Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, D-Hawaii, the first Hindu in Congress.
Gabbard — a member of the House committees on Foreign Affairs and Armed Services, and co-chair of the India Caucus — is an oddity in American politics. Ever since her 2016 resignation from the Democratic National Committee to endorse Bernie Sanders for president, she has been a rising star in the progressive wing of the Democratic Party. Last year, she racked up endorsements from groups like Progressive Democrats of America and Our Revolution, and she sailed to re-election.
But she has also become a polarizing figure. Her progressive domestic politics are at odds with her support for authoritarians abroad, including Modi, Sisi, and Syria’s Bashar al-Assad. As right-wing nationalism rises across the globe, it is beginning to be recognized as an existential threat to a world order rooted in liberal democratic values, and Gabbard, an Iraq War veteran, is now being pushed to choose sides. Gabbard was embraced early on by pro-Modi elements of the Hindu-American diaspora in the U.S., who have donated generously to her campaigns. But as she flirts with the idea of running for president, she has publicly cut ties with those fervent supporters on at least one occasion, while continuing to court them in private.
