WHY THEOLOGY OF THE BODY IS THE NEED OF THE TIME?

We are living in a culture that has distorted or manipulated the true image of the human body and sexuality. The sexual revolution has degraded the human body to any other consumer product. Thus, unbridled sexual freedom and recreational sex have resulted in the desecration of the human body and sexuality in total.

There is a separation between the human body and the spiritual soul. We keep our spiritual life away from our day to day life. Spiritual people try to keep the bodily and sexual things away from spirituality. Worldly people, on the other hand, try to keep spirituality out of their body or sexuality. It’s not that human nature has changed; it’s that our values and worldview have changed.

The rapidly accelerating divorce rate is disintegrating the institution of marriage and of the family. Many of our serious social problems are merely symptoms of the breakdown of marriage and the family. Many young people are losing their confidence in the institution of marriage.

The rejection of the sanctity of 1) life, 2) marriage and 3) sex resulted in a new age of moral relativism.

Even the Catholic Church is going through a lot of crisis of more scandals, chaos, and confusions today.

WHO IS THE MOST AFFECTED BY THIS CULTURE OF DEATH?

Our children are often confused or rather perplexed owing to a lot of questions they encounter in this regard, the pressure effacing from the secular media, schools, and peer groups or governments. Most of the catechists, parents, and teachers are helpless and unequipped as how to handle these situations or help our kids to understand the truth about their bodies and sex or other ethical values.

If they do not pose questions towards us, would it imply that they don’t have any, or are they morally and ethically convinced and equipped?

Where do they get answers to all these questions?

Are we able to help our children effectively in this regard?

Are there an open and free environment at home or Faith Formation classes where the children can feel at comfort to clarify their convictions or ask questions about their sexuality?

How do we set right this distorted and erroneous image of our body and sexuality?

Theology of the Body, taught by Pope St. John Paul II is a contemporary vision for life, offering a “NEW LENS” through which we can authentically see ourselves, our faith, our relationships and the world around us.

HOW TO PASS THIS MESSAGE TO OUR CHILDREN?

As a parent/teacher if we do not understand the meaning of human life, our destiny, sexuality, relationships, and love, how could we expect to be sharing this with our children and the generations to come? We cannot give what we don’t have.
“My people are ruined for lack of knowledge” (Hosea 4:6)

Jesus said to the Sadducees who were confused about the resurrection: “Are you not misled because you do not know the scriptures or the power of God?” (Mark 12:24)

The only way we can fulfill our duty before God to pass this on to our children is to immerse ourselves in it first. We are here not to condemn ourselves about our failures but to educate ourselves and open our hearts to the Holy Spirit so that we understand this new vision of life to pass it on to our children.

Pope Francis puts it in this way “Evangelists must allow God’s word to enter their own hearts before passing it on to others. Christ’s message must truly penetrate and possess the preacher, not just intellectually but in his/her entire being” (Pope Francis- Joy of the Gospel: 151)

If we don’t do it with urgency, the world will fill all innocent minds with a totally immoral and contrary message in the vacuum of our silence.

As Papal biographer and Catholic theologian, George Weigel describes: “Theology of the Body is a kind of theological time-bomb set to go off dramatic consequences, perhaps in the 21st century”.
