‘Onam’ is one festival that all Keralites irrespective of religion embrace with a whole heart. In a democracy, everyone has the freedom of opinion but responsible leaders should try to shape their opinions in order to unite the people.
A person who has not lived in Kerala will never be able to understand the full essence and spirit of ‘Onam’ celebrations. To change the very name of the festival is, in my opinion, is morally wrong and strikes the heart of any Malayalee who really understand the true meaning of ‘Onam’.
What did King Mahabali do to deserve such a punishment? There was no character trait in that Keralite King to deserve such a punishment. Maybe, the ‘ Devanmar’ feared that the Keralites will have a better life (than they themselves had) under the reign of Mahabali. It may also be inferred that the King belonged to a different caste and in order to assert the caste structure, Mahabali was deposed.
It is truly deplorable that such a wonderful, unifying celebration is also being dragged into a controversy. What is next? …‘Keralapiravi’?

HINDUISM the word is very confusing. Do we have to break a coconut to clear the confusion?
Most people get confused what Hinduism is. Hinduism is one of the greatest thoughts in the world. It is very broad, vast like the mighty ocean. It is not a particular religion. It is a collection of all different kind and even contradicting thoughts. Atheism, monotheism, polytheism, cosmo-theism, micro-theism; Jainism,Buddhism and even Indian Christianity & Islam is part of Hinduism. Middle eastern/ Mediterranean thoughts and even Christianity was influenced by Hinduism. Many of the sayings of Jesus, that is narrated in the gospels are borrowed from Buddhism. So Hinduism is not an isolated or secluded religion within in the geographical boundaries of the Indian Sub-continent. The literature of Hinduism is so vast a human many need several lives to read them. All the scholars of Hinduism were never able to learn even a small fraction of Hinduism.
So it is unfortunate that Hinduism is understood as it is practiced by a Hindu religious man or devote. In other words what we see these days as Hinduism is temple religion, and it has very little to share with Hinduism.
The temple religion is very confusing and it is very far away from the core of Hinduism. People measure religion by what is practiced and performed by its members. “ The holy books” has great ideas and thoughts. But that doesn’t mean that what ever is done by a member of that particular religion is what is said in those books. You cannot identify the deeds of any devote to his religion. A cunning devote { not a true one} will always try to associate his deeds to the religion and 'he god of that religion. That was one of the major draw backs of all religions. 'In the name of god'- the cruel, cunning and selfish did evil. Wars in the name of god has killed more humans than the total of all political wars combined. And is continuing even now in many parts of the globe.
Religion cannot disclaim the deeds of the devotee. If the devotee is doing evil in the name of a religion, that religion has something wrong fundamentally. Christian priests are getting arrested world wide for crimes they did. Several pastors are in American prisons for crimes and fraud. But in India & Kerala things are different. Politicians and religious leaders commit crime and seek shelter under the party or religion. That is evil. It must not be tolerated in order for the civilization to survive.
Some opinions give a clear picture no matter how one wants to wrap it in a confusing mixture. Andrew (I think it is a fake name) is a self-proclaimed atheist, however, he rarely criticizes a certain religion. All his criticisms are focused on Christianity and Christians in general.
The opinion given here is good example. He wants to patronize Christianity under the Hindu cloak and put the lime light on guilty Christian priests. The article has nothing to do with Christianity at all. It talks about a King who ruled Kerala who was unjustly punished. Yet, Andrew talks nothing about the injustice but try to confuse readers by painting a mystic picture of Hindu religion. Nobody has any argument about the great precepts and philosophy of the Hindu religion. It has survived millenniums and is probably older than any other religion. But wake up and smell the roses! Don’t think that readers are will be dazed by the mixture of your confused philosophy. Talk sense and come to the point…
What do you think about the punishment Mahabali endured? That is the key question.

I am interested in social issues. I would like the society to be compassionate to the oppressed and down-trodden. When we look at history, we see some people exploit and abuse certain section of the society in order to satiate their selfish greed. The human history is replete with examples of struggles and battles in order to overcome oppression. The human race, as a whole, progresses as the neglected, ignored, abused and oppressed sections of people becomes educated, resourceful and independent.
The history of India is no different from the parallels all over the world. We fought and won the political freedom from the British may decades ago. However, the plight of the oppressed sections of the society continued to be the same. The consecutive Congress governments enacted some legislation to alleviate the situation and it must be admitted that it worked to some extent. If there were no ‘reservation quota’ for government jobs, the social situation would have been really pathetic.
It look like that some of the policies by the present government will negate the gains we achieved in the previous decades. There is no point in fighting about politics. This is a social issue and must be dealt with as such, no matter what political party is in power. Let us hope that the truth will open the eyes of those in power and it will lead to lasting change in the social arena in the future.
P.S. The comments of ‘Kalan’ and ‘Kutty’ are amusing but does not deserve any response.
Different religions are different levels of understanding. There are threads of truth in all religions. To think that your religion is the only true religion is ignorance. Different religions are at different levels in the revelation of truth in it. Different religions can be viewed as covenants God made with different cultures at different time through the prophets (Muni or Nabi) of those religions. We all search for truth and we get what we deserve. Those who deserve a higher level of understanding as God reveals it to them change to a different religion and the truth in it as a result of their search for truth. We must have that freedom to choose. To curtail that freedom is to invite violence.
If you do not know, Malayalee American, ‘Injustice anywhere is injustice everywhere’. Grow up and be mature in your comments.
About, comfort, please do not think that all American malayalees live more comfortably than ‘Kerala Malyalees’. Many Kerala Malayalees live a more comfortable life as I understand it. Then again, comfort is a matter of opinion and relativity. If more Malayalees are living in Kerala and USA then why you want were your Mask and work for the oppressed? It is easy to bullshit but to practice you have to burn your ass. More crooks are hiding under the name of SchCast. I will smoke you out of there pretty soon
