The Catholic-Christian Secular Forum (CSF), a Mumbai-based activist national community NGO has written to the Union Home Minister, P. Chidambaram and the BJP leadership, Mr. L. K. Advani, Mr. Nitin Gadkari and Mrs. Sushma Swaraj, urging them to place a leash on sadhvi Uma Bharti, who has been criticizing Christian religious leaders.

The CSF has taken strong exception to BJP’s sanyasin Uma Bharti comparing Nirmal Baba, presently in the eye of a storm with Paul Dinakaran, the world renowned evangelist and educationist, who is also chancellor of Karunaya University. “If godmen of any faith are being targeted, it is not by Christians, who respect all religions and hence, there seems to be a malicious motive in attacking Dinakaran or any other Christian spiritual gurus. Followers and godmen of any religion are free to propagate their faith in any of the so-called ‘Christian’ countries, but the same is not permitted to Christians in India or most countries abroad”, said Joseph Dias, The CSF general secretary.

Speaking to reporters in Nagpur and Allahabad recently, Uma Bharti termed the criticism of Nirmal Baba as wrong, saying only Hindu spiritual leaders are being criticized. According to The CSF, the minority community had no role to play in defaming any religious leader. “Christians therefore being dragged into the controversy smacks of political opportunism, with the 2014 Parliamentary and Assembly elections being just around the corner. Such uncalled for statements hurt religious sentiments and give the impression that there is a renewed attempt to polarize the Hindutva vote and consolidate it in favour of the BJP” Joseph Dias added.

“Most religions have huge gatherings of their followers, with believers of other faiths, including Christians also attending. No one speaks against such gatherings by those of other religions, but Christians who are soft targets are attacked. India is a secular country, where religious liberty is ‘supposed to be constitutionally guaranteed’ but the reality is far from it. The majority and significant minorities, like the Buddhists, Muslims and Sikhs are able to secure their rights, while Christians are the hapless victims and persecuted. There are bigger godmen in other religions, like Zakir Naik, so why is Paul Dinakaran exclusively picked?”, The CSF general secretary asked.

“Religion is not just a sensitive issue, but also one of personal choice and must be kept so. Such utterances only serve to disturb the communal fabric of the country and are not in national interest. The law of the land must be followed and action must be taken to restrain those like Uma Bharti or Christians and other micro-minorities, will continue bearing the brunt of the bashing”, Joseph Dias concluded.

Bharati’s comments came in the wake of a spate of complaints of fraud against Nirmaljeet Singh Nirula, alias Nirmal Baba, who is also a close relative of former Jharkhand assembly Speaker Inder Singh Namdhari, who however says, has no links with his brother-in-law. Paul Dhinakaran, son of the evangelist D. G. S. Dhinakaran of the evangelist ministry Jesus Calls is highly respected and has a following of lakhs in India and the world over. His yeoman service, irrespective of any distinction is comparable to few, least of all the likes of Uma Bharti, who are wily communal politicians. Jesus Calls has impacted the lives of lakhs, meeting not just their spiritual, but also temporal needs, like health, education, social welfare, etc.

Uma Bharti deflects attention from Nirmal Baba

New Delhi, May 05, 2012: BJP’s firebrand sannyasin Uma Bharti has sparked a fresh row over why Hindu spiritual gurus like Nirmal Baba are questioned, while Christian faith healers like Paul Dhinakaran are allowed to mint money in an unfettered manner.

The self-proclaimed faith healer Paul Dhinakaran is popular in southern India, and is reportedly the owner of a massive Rs 5,000 crore empire.

Speaking to reporters in Nagpur and Allahabad recently, Uma Bharti termed the criticism of Nirmal Baba as wrong, saying only Hindu spiritual leaders are being singled out for criticism.

“Why are spiritual leaders from other religions such as Paul Dhinakaran not being targeted,” she said.

She said, “I am not defending nor opposing Nirmal Baba, but attempts are being made to defame Nirmal Baba. It is wrong to do anything that will dent people’s faith in spiritual healers.”

Uma Bharti questioned Paul Dhinakaran, who is an Indian Christian faith healer and chancellor of Karunya University.

He is the son of the evangelist D. G. S. Dhinakaran and runs the evangelist ministry Jesus Calls.

Bharti said Dhinakaran is also known to be holding similar congregations and nobody raises a voice against him.

Paul Dhinakaran has been accused of religious conversion in various parts of South India.

Uma Bharati said, only Hindus were targeted over questionable practices in the name of religion.

“I do not wish to say anything on Nirmal Baba issue, neither in favour of him nor against him. But I do feel there is a widespread tendency to target Hindus when it comes to questionable practices in the name of religion,” Bharati said.

She added, “there are several instances of congregations being held by religious leaders from other faiths where they reportedly perform miracles to alleviate the sufferings of their followers. Such gatherings, which bear a striking similarity to the Nirmal Darbar, are held in the US. A well-known evangelist from South India is also known to be holding similar congregations. But nobody raises a voice against them. That is something I cannot approve of.”

“Even on the question of animal sacrifice, there has been a lot of diatribe against the Hindu practice of bali (sacrifice), though it is well-known that some other major religions of the world are also known to indulge in slaughter of animals on a large scale for celebration of festivals, Bharati said adding “why is it that it is always the Hindus who are placed in the dock?”

In an investigation by India TV team, it was found that Paul Dhinakaran offers Business Blessings Plan on his website promising wisdom, wealth and prosperity.

Businessmen are asked to enroll with Dhinakaran’s Jesus Calls ministry and part with annual donations, or monthly donations from their earnings.

In the website, Dhinakaran claims that Jesus Christ came in his dreams on March 14, 2008 to say that the New Age has dawned and the old age is over with the passing away of his (Dhinakaran’s) father.

Dhinakaran offers to perform special prayers for businesses, once they are enrolled with the Business Blessings Plan.

Uma Bharati says all this is “business in the name of magic”.

In his public meetings, attended by thousands, Paul Dhinakaran claims to have made people with hearing disability to hear, people with vision disability to see, and those with walking disability to walk normally.

All these claims are yet to be scientifically tested.

Dhinakaran also promises to get rid of evil from the souls of people. “You can also become God’s angel”, he promises.
