Kashif Parvaiz was wheeled into the Morristown courtroom Tuesday bearing the signs of the gunshot wounds he received one week ago. His left arm was in a sling, his left leg was in a cast poking out of a yellow prison jump suit.

His family sat in the front row. His mother dabbed away tears as she stared at her son, the man accused of murdering his wife Aug. 16 as the couple walked along a quiet street in Boonton with their 3-year-old son.

Parvaiz, making his first court appearance on murder charges, sat stone-faced as his bail was raised to $3 million from $1 million. He winced slightly when Morris County Prosecutor Robert Bianchi referred to him as "sociopathic" and told the court how the 26-year-old "laughingly plotted the murder" of Nazish Noorani with the help of Antoinette Stephen.

Minutes earlier, Stephen, 27, who had been extradited from Boston on Monday and who is also charged with murder, had entered the courtroom. Her hands cuffed in front of her, tears welled in her eyes as she was read her rights. Her bail remained $5 million. Both have another bail hearing scheduled for Friday.

Authorities believe the two conspired to kill Noorani and then wound Parvaiz so he could concoct a story of assault and send police on a wild goose chase.

"This twisted tale that these two engaged in is more egregious and more narcissistic than anything I have ever seen in 23 years," Bianchi said.

Attorney Mitchell Ansell, who Parvaiz retained over the weekend, said his client will plead not guilty.

"Kashif Parvaiz did not kill his wife," Ansell said outside the courtroom. "That is the last thing that Kashif Parvaiz wanted to happen on that date. Kashif Parvaiz loved his wife more than anything."

Meanwhile, The Star-Ledger has obtained a police report from Boston showing Parvaiz was charged with assault and battery six months ago for allegedly slapping and pushing a woman who was neither his wife nor Stephen. Parvaiz denied slapping the woman but admitted he "may have accidentally pushed her." The charges were dropped when the 20-year-old New York woman failed to show in court, according to the Suffolk County, Mass., district attorney’s office.

The alleged incident occurred while Parvaiz was living in an apartment in East Boston, not far from Logan International Airport.

The Star-Ledger has also learned that three days after his arrest for assault and battery, Parvaiz tangled with Boston police again. This time, however, he claimed to be the victim.

In a story similar to the one he would later tell Boonton police, Parvaiz said three Hispanic males attacked him while he was taking out the trash, striking him in the back of the head with a hammer, according to a police report.

After being struck, Parvaiz told police, he fell to the ground and the assailants began punching and kicking him. The attackers spoke to each other in Spanish during the attack.

One suspect flashed a dark-colored handgun and demanded Parvaiz’s money, about $300 cash, after which the three men fled on foot, Parvaiz told police. Police found no one matching the description. Parvaiz was treated at his home by Boston EMS and then transported to the hospital for further treatment, according to the police report.

After he and his wife were shot, Parvaiz initially told Morris County authorities three armed men approached him, shouted "terrorist," shot the couple, then fled on foot, according to court papers. Police say his story fell apart when he gave conflicting versions upon repeated questioning.

Parvaiz eventually admitted to contracting with Stephen to kill Noorani, according to the arrest affidavit.

"We dispute that confession," Ansell said.

Stephen was arrested Friday in Boston. Her family lives in Bellerica, Mass., about 20 miles north of the city.

The nature of the relationship between Parvaiz and Stephen remains unclear. The two maintain they were just friends; Parvaiz has told authorities they met in Brooklyn. However, neighbors in Boston said Parvaiz often referred to Stephen as his fiancée.

Slay suspects met in class

The East Boston man accused of plotting with his Billerica lover to gun down his wife in New Jersey so he could escape his marriage met his alleged accomplice in an architecture class in the Boston area, according to a neighbor.

Kashif Parvaiz, 26, and his girlfriend, Indian immigrant Antionette Stephen, 26, of Billerica, are accused of murdering Parvaiz’s wife Tuesday in New Jersey.

Stephen’s Billerica neighbor said yesterday that the pair’s fateful first meeting was in an architecture class when Stephen, who had been educated in India, was gaining her U.S. credentials.

“She said they met at school, in a class,” said Mike Stilling, who lives next to Stephen and her parents.

Although Stephen insisted Parvaiz was a friend, a law-enforcement source told the Herald they were lovers. She was sharing a house in Billerica with her parents, neighbors said, but both Stephen and Parvaiz were listed on an East Boston mailbox where Parvaiz lived. Investigators were seen yesterday removing items from the apartment.

Parvaiz first started coming to the quiet suburban neighborhood in Billerica, on his motorcycle, in the spring of 2010, Stilling said. “I asked if he was her boyfriend, and she laughed, and said, ‘No way, he had a wife and two kids.’ ”

Parvaiz and Stephen are accused of plotting to gun down Parvaiz’s wife, Nazish Noorani, 27, as she walked with Parvaiz and their 3-year-old son Tuesday near her parents’ home in Boonton, N.J.

Stephen worked at a Best Buy in Cambridge. Her father, a doctor, and her mother, a nurse, moved here from India several years ago and joined a Catholic church.

“They’re quiet and clean and religious,” said Stilling, the neighbor. A statue of the Blessed Mother stands outside of the family’s Colonial.

Stilling was unable to say where Parvaiz and Stephen were attending the architecture class.
