Even a dog’s life is considered precious in America, the pro-life nation. Therefore, the execution of a black teenager by a white police officer naturally provoked protesters after a grand jury verdict the other day in Ferguson, Missouri.
Just in news that another black 12-year-old was shot dead in Cleveland, Ohio. What is wrong with US police protocols? In the second case, audios reveal specific questions if the weapon bearer is black or white.
I have requested a public record from the Ferguson City Police
Department Protocol for self defense in such scenarios. I made a call to
Ferguson PD. The person who attended the call said he could not hear me,
understand my question.
Peace and civility are very important in any society. However, we need to
remember that our police forces have budgets for modern technology devices like
stun guns or Tasers all over. It is legal so long as the user knows how to aim
properly. I am not writing about stun gun technology (used in direct touch vs
Taser use from safe distance) but wonder why the grand jury came out with
unconvincing evidence that the teenager had to be executed by an officer on the
street under the circumstances we read about. Not all facts or pieces of
evidence presented to the grand jury are out for us. New York Times reported
the prosecutor did not provide, though customary, the grand jury with a summary
of evidence. In their deliberations, the jury was overburdened with a pile of
papers, and may have ended up in confusion.
The story of the Ferguson
killing began with a store theft. Sometime in August this year, a few
packets of cigarettes were stolen from a shop, owned by an Indian. That was
theft. Police were called in and they found a black teenager, hefty and tall,
walking in the middle of a road, not on the sidewalks, along with another teen.
They were ordered to walk on the sidewalk.
The teenagers replied they were nearing home and they were okay. Rebellious or
mentally handicapped, we do not know from the grand jury verdict. There are
thousands of bipolar cases in America.
Those on medications can be functional enough.
The episode, under our review, ended with a shooting by the police officer who
claimed to have been attacked by the teenager, Michael Brown. Was there a small
body camera for the officer to prove it?
The officer was inside a car. His neck and face had bruises
according to jury. The exhibits, we see as one lady on the TV said, don't show
any blood or any bruise other
than a black line, not even a scratch or cut. The police vehicle’s glass window
had a hole caused by a bullet that went off during a fight by the offender
standing outside near the officer seated in the car. While the black teenager
decided to walk away, the officer followed him to straighten him out rather
dead.
So, when the teenager decided to leave, the officer followed him aggressively.
The teenager got offended again and turned back on him like a football player
with his head bent down. Was he not full of his football imagination, unaware
of a fully empowered officer? Was he not bipolar and not on medication? There
are unanswered questions.
The officer took his revolver and shot the football guy, three times on his
head to kill the boy right there. I believe I am getting all the facts straight
from TV, newspapers, and various articles I could grab in a short time. Was
this officer properly trained on his duty? Even in my small town, Orange City, Florida,
with a $2.5 million budget for the police, a small amount, officers have tasers
to numb an attacker's muscles so that no further aggressive attack is possible.
They are provided with modern small-sized body cameras to photograph the scene
for objective evaluation of their police action. Shooting and taking a person’s
life is not an officer’s first resort or discretion. A team of officers or even
police dogs can be brought to the scene in seconds after Taser is used; even
medical help for the victim if needed.
Of course, no law enforcement officer has to risk his life
in the process and has his discretion for self- defense. Sometime ago, in my
city, a guy holding a young child hostage was shot dead by our detective. There
was good reason because he had a knife in hands with which he could hurt the
kid, or while speeding the vehicle, he could have killed himself or others.
Recently, 10 officers were at a scene to arrest a drug dealer, with their
canine force.
We are looking for justice in a nation with grand juries and big budgets. If
they are overspending for all these modern sources, can't they give a more
convincing explanation to media about their side of the story? It is not
that minorities are targeted. There are instances in the past of others
including Caucasian victims. Now, very soon a grand jury member will write
another book! That is America.
NY Times is questioning why the grand jury was formed in November not
immediately in August? The grand jury selection has to be fair, quick, and
prosecutors should be like Caesar s wife ‘above all suspicion.’
To my surprise, I read the officer involved had a wedding
during the Jury hearing days. He has come out a hero. The rioters are portrayed
as taking law into their arms, destroying property. Why is America so hard
on protesters?
The question is, can these police power skip all protocols, written policies in
their respective departments, and simply become heroes?
Are these protestors wasting their energy without any probable cause despite
several incidents of shootings elsewhere also? Like the November 24th shooting
of another black kid playing with a toy gun in the park in Ohio.
We have a lot to thank about America,
the superpower. However, sad to say, since the killings of 1621 or 1700s, the
Nation’s news media continue to report brutal murders, racial riots, prejudice,
over-budgeting with very few productive police departments or fire departments. No
earthly governance can be perfect. How come the police officer failed to get a
second officer immediately in seconds? How come the grand jury evidence is so
frivolous! Is there transparency in all these grand jury matters?
