Dr. Yaltho Mathew Cheerothottam

Dr. Yaltho Mathew passed away on November 16, 2014 at Alberta University Hospital in Edmonton, Canada. He was the youngest of five siblings, was born to Mathew and Mariamma on May 6, 1945 in a then obscure little village of Pothanicad in Kerala, India. He hails from the family of Cheerothottam, a prestigious family that produced an array of eminent priests, IAS officers, doctors, nurses, teachers and technicians of all kinds. He had two sisters, Annie Abraham (widowed) and Mary married to Joseph and two brothers, C.M. Geevarghese married to Annamma and C.M. Mathai married to Sosamma. He excelled in his studies in school and college but little did anyone know that he will eventually end up in Edmonton, Canada where he has been well settled for the past more than 37 years, rising to dizzy heights with a glowing medical career. Dr. Yaltho was a well accomplished Clinical Professor at the University of Alberta and a Consultant Psychiatrist at the Royal Alexandra Hospital. The roads he travelled, the milestones he passed, the degrees he bagged, the medical diplomas he secured, the citations he received are stunningly remarkable.

He began his primary education at his home village school, moved on to collegiate education at Mar Athanasius College, Kothamangalam, Kerala, and obtained his Bachelor's degree in Medicine and Surgery (M.B.B.S.) from Calicut Medical College. His appetite for further studies took him to the United Kingdom in 1975 where he became, inter alia, a member of the prestigious club of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (M.R.C.Psych.). In 1977, he became Licentiate of Medical Council of Canada (L.M.C.C.) and was acclaimed Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (F.R.C.P.) Canada in 1980. His professional medical career was so outstanding that he became the Licensing Examiner of the Medical Council of Canada, OSCE examiner and Team Leader Medical Admissions Committee at University of Alberta, External Examiner in Psychiatry at Misericordia Hospital, Consultant to Alberta Workman's Compensation Board, Member of the Alberta Mental health Review Panels and Consultant to five multinational pharmaceutical Companies and the list goes on. The different Associations and Committees he was member of are way too many  to be listed here, such as Alberta and Psychiatric Association, Chairman of Audit Committee and Clinical Records Committee of Alberta Hospital, just to name a few. He received research awards and published to his credit numerous articles on topics of general interest in daily newspapers and magazines.
Apart from his professional medical career, he got actively involved in non-professional organizations, serving as a Managing Committee Member of St. Gregorios Orthodox Church, Edmonton, as the First Vice President of the Canadian Kerala Cultural Organization and as the Convention Chairman of AKMG held in Vancouver. He was one of the initiators of the 'COMPAKT Kudumba Yogum' and was its first Vice President.
Dr. Yaltho was a family man who met the love of his life, Valza of Mattamana family from Kuruppampadi, Kerala. He was a frequent traveler in all continents around the world and his wife always hitched a pleasant ride with him wherever he went. They have two children, Smitha and Toby, both of whom are medical doctors. Dr. Smitha Yaltho is married to Ravi Singh Thakur and Toby is married to Dr. Saira George with three children, Avani, Layla and Jacob.
The Funeral service will be held at the St. Gregorios Orthodox Church, Edmonton, Canada on Friday evening and Saturday morning and the interment at the Westlawn cemetery at noon on Saturday November 22, 2014. He will be missed dearly. Even when he is out of sight, he will never be out of mind. He took good care of us and now God takes good care of him. May God rest his soul in peace.
