Clinton, Trump talk gun control, Russia, immigration in final debate

Las Vegas, Oct 20 (IANS) Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton and her Republican rival Donald Trump went head-to-head in the final presidential debate on Wednesday sparring over various issues including gun control, immigration and Russia.

Without a hand shake or a smile, the two candidates took the stage at here at University of Nevada's Thomas and Mack Centre, CNN reported.

Moderator Chris Wallace of Fox News started the 90-minute debate with the topic Supreme Court and the first was "Where do you want to see the court take the country and secondly what's your view on how the Constitution should be interpreted?"

The first reply came from Clinton where she said: "When we talk about the Supreme Court, it really raises the central issue in this election, namely what kind of country are we going to be?"

"I feel strongly that the Supreme Court needs to stand on the side of the American people, not on the side of the powerful corporations and wealthy... We need a Supreme Court that stands up on behalf of women's rights, on behalf of the rights of the LGBT community," the former Secretary of State added.

She also talked about abortion, gay marriage and money in politics.

Trump, in response said, "The Supreme Court is what it's all about".

"The justices that I am going to appoint will interpret the constitution the way the founders wanted it and I believe that's very, very important."

The real-estate magnate raised the Second Amendment (protects the rights of people to keep and bear arms), hitting Clinton for being anti-gun.

Clinton insisted that she did not want to take away everyone's guns, but said she wass in favour of sensible gun control.

"I support the second amendment...But I also believe that there can be and must be reasonable regulation," she added.

Regarding immigration, Trump reiterated his stance to build the wall along the Mexican border.

"We all want the wall...We have to have strong borders. We have to keep drugs out of the country."

"She wants to have open borders," he accused Clinton.

"We have some bad 'hombres' here, and we're going to get them out," he adds, dropping a little Spanish.

Clinton condemned Trump's "deportation force", which she described as impractical and "an idea that is not in keeping with who we are as a nation".

The former First Lady said Russian President Vladimir Putin wanted Trump be elected because he wants a "puppet" as US president.

'You're the puppet!' Trump snapped back.

He said Putin had "outsmarted" and "outplayed" Clinton at every turn.

Clinton also said that she was "encouraged" by the special forces helping Iraqi troops but will not support putting troops on the ground, adding that it's not in US interests.

"We need to keep our eye on IS (Islamic State)," said Clinton, also calling for an "intelligence surge" to prevent homegrown terrorism.

The candidates are debating on six topics: national debt and health and social benefits, immigration, economy, the Supreme Court, foreign flashpoints and their fitness to be president.

This debate comes 20 days before the November 8 election.

Trump invites Obama's half-brother to last debate with Clinton

Las Vegas, Oct 20 (IANS) US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has invited President Barack Obama's Kenyan-born half-brother and the mother of one of the US citizens killed in the 2012 attack on the US consulate in Benghazi to the third and last debate with Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.

The televised debate, which will take place on Wednesday evening in Las Vegas, will be the final face-off between the two candidates before the November 8 election, EFE news reported.

In accord with his defiant attitude in the second debate, to which he brought three women who had accused former President Bill Clinton of sexual abuse or harassment, Trump has now decided to invite Malik Obama, the President's half-brother, who last July expressed his support for the magnate.

Trump's campaign director, Kellyanne Conway, told MSNBC that Malik Obama "wanted" to attend the debate and that members of the mogul's team are "happy" he was invited.

When asked at his daily press conference about that invitation, White House spokesman Josh Earnest said that the President has not spent "a lot of time" thinking about it and that no relationship exists between him and his half-brother.

Also among Trump's invited guests are Patricia Smith, the mother of Sean Smith, a State Department IT consultant who was killed in the 2012 Benghazi attack.

That attack occurred when Clinton was Secretary of State and, during the Republican National Convention in July in Cleveland, Smith specifically blamed the Democratic candidate for her son's death, EFE news added.

Meanwhile, Clinton has invited to the debate, among other people, Hewlett Packard CEO Meg Whitman, who since August has been one of her high-profile Republican backers.

Billionaire Mark Cuban, one of Trump's most ferocious critics, will also be on hand at the debate, just as he was in the first face-off between the two presidential candidates.

The debate will be moderated by conservative Fox News journalist Chris Wallace and it is expected that it will be the first time the two candidates will discuss the immigration issue.

The contest will be divided into six 15-minute segments covering the national debt and social programmes, immigration, the economy, the Supreme Court, foreign policy and the candidates' ability to be President.

While Clinton has devoted several days to preparing for the debate, Trump has said that he trusts his own instincts to see him through.

The latest voter surveys in Nevada, a state that could be key in deciding the Nov. 8 election and where Hispanics represent 27.8 per cent of the population and 17 percent of the possible voters, show that Clinton is leading Trump by 2.5 per cent.

It is expected that the TV viewing audience for this contest will be smaller than that for the second debate, when 66 million people tuned in, a figure that was lower than for the first debate, when a record 84 million people watched.

Sorry Trump; you had the chance but you nailed the last nail on your own coffin.  You are done
Independent 2016-10-19 21:09:46
1.   Trump lost his chance when he refused to say that he would accept the result whatever it      may be. it has another connotation that he already know that he is not going to win.
2. Trump lost his chance to win more women vote by refraining from calling Clinton 'Nasty women'
3. Trump lost his chance to win Hispanic vote by injecting the sarcastic word 'hombre' (man) while debating on emigration.  It sounded like Malayalees calling blacks 'karumpan'
HIllary won the debate  52% Trump 39%
I will be voting for Hillary Clinton
