പറയാന്‍ വേണ്ടി ഒരു കാരണം;

Give me the flute (Khalil Gibran)
Give me the flute, and sing
immortaltiy lies in a song
and even after we've perished
the flute continues to lament
have you taken refuge in the woods
away from places like me
followed streams on their courses
and climbed up the rocks.
Did you ever bathe in a perfume
and dry yourself with a light
drink the dawn as wine
rarefied in goblets of ether
give me the flute then and sing
the best of prayer is song
and even when life perishes
the flute continues to lament
have you spent an evening
as I have done among vines
where the golden candelabra
clusters hang down
did you sleep on the grass at night
and let space be your blanket
abstaining from all that will come
forgetful of all that has passed
give the flute then and sing
in singing is Justice for the heart
and even after every guilt has perished
the flute continues to lament
give the flute and sing
 forget illness and its cure
people are nothing but lines
which are scribbled on water.
They all are but the tunnels of moles,
threads in the spider's web.
For he who lives in weakness, slowly he will die.
Forest is the abode of life, and were the days
gathered in my hand, there would i strew them,
but time it is that chooses
from my soul; whenever i long for
forest time bars my way worth excuse;
the fates have ways un-altering,
and men's aims are
beyond their impotent reach.

Many assume music to be eternal, but it exist only in the present. The rhythm, the notes, the tunes, the meaning of words; all echos in our brain in the present. You may confuse it to be a metaphysical experience, but it is all physical. Music is enchanting because it can bind us to the present, the present which slips away from us every fraction of a second. The bondage of music makes us aware of our presence in the present. Only the present is real. Past is gone for ever, never to return. The future we don't know; what it will be or even there is one, it may never come. Music being a combination of notes which began in the past, continuing in the present to the future may give us the illusion of being eternal. Only few things in our life experience has that ability to link within us the past, present & future at the same time.

many people make the tragic mistake of assimilating music to life. Life is just the present. Only the present is real. So enjoy life in its full in the present. Any time you attach past and future to your life, you become confused, hallucinated and intoxicated with ignorance. You become pessimistic and melancholic, then death follows you in every step. That is the time 'ism' will catch you and make you a slave. That is what you see ever through the history and in the present tragedy of youths all across the world running to join ISIS. The corrupted selfish society we live in gives no hope. Religion and politics enslaved us from the time we are born and ever since we lived in an illusion. Humans must be left alone to live in reality, not in false promises of future. The false gospel is preached by priests and their religion. They all has to go; then peace will germinate in this earth.

Music is a mystery, but life is an attitude. The more we accept & acknowledge the ownership of our ignorance of our own on life, the beauty of life blooms in you like a Lotus of thousands of petals. Then we become more and more aware and awareness will lead you through the paths of freedom.

'' give the flute and sing, forget illness and its cure, people are nothing but lines which are scribed in water”- kalil Gibran. Make your life a flowing river. Then you can enjoy the inner rhythm of music, life and even the Universe. That will lead you to a therapeutic inner peacefulness and your awareness of your ignorance.

Knowledge may be power, but freedom from knowledge is bliss.

you want to see life in full bloom; depart from the madding world and

alone under the Bodi tree by the lonely road where no one will even pass by.

There is something strange about this Gibran poem 'Give me the flute' quoted here. There is a discontinuity in flow and meaning after the line:

       people are nothing but lines
       which are scribbled on water.

Mr. Puthenkurish probably took the poem from poemhunter.com. I believe they've made a mistake. Every other source has quoted the poem correctly. The last portion of the poem quoted here actually belongs to another famous Gibran poem called “Two Voices” which tells the story of two people advocating different ways of life. A younger voice tells of the joys of living a life close to nature, while the voice of an older person says he or she cannot abandon life in an urban area because time has made such a shift inaccessible.

The confusion is caused by Gibran's use of flute in this poem, and the following lines very similar to the ending of 'Give me the flute' quoted here.

For people are lines which are written
not with ink but with water.

I saw these translations:
poem hunter- "people are nothing but lines which are scribed  on water.
Facebook -  " for people are lines, written, but by water.

If the two translations andrew found is in response to what I said earlier, then andrew hasn't cared to comprehend what I was saying. So let me try to say it again and differently.

The original Gibran poem  'Give me the flute' is a shorter poem and ends with the lines

       people are nothing but lines
       which are scribbled on water.

The poem copied and translated by Mr. Puthenkurish above is longer and continues with more lines. The additional lines make the poem strange and discontinuous in flow and meaning. Poemhunter.com, which is probably from where it was copied, made a mistake and added the END OF ANOTHER POEM by Gibran called “Two Voices” to it.

Go ahead and search for the poem in sites other than poemhunter.com. I hope I have made myself clearer this time.

The complete works of Kahlil Gibran.’,   (Twelve Books in one) is a good reference book.  Usually, when I take a poem, from poem hunter, I cross refer it with the book I have.  But, in this case I could not find a poem ‘Give me the flute’  ‘The complete works of Kahlil Gibran.’  But somehow, I liked the theme of the poem because it takes us away from the hustles and bustles of the life and put ‘on the grass with space as the blanket.’

‘Forget illness and its cure
people are nothing but lines
which are scribbled on water.
They all are but the tunnels of moles,
threads in the spider's web.
For he who lives in weakness, slowly he will die.

Poet is talking about the brevity of life. We have every reason to lament about our life; we are like a line drawn in the water which is wiped out in a second by a small wave, like threads in the spider web or like the tunnels of moles.  Whatever it may be, poet reminds us through his line, ‘For he who lives in weakness, slowly he will die.’ (Probably he is telling us that with a strong will, we will be able to live a healthy life)  Even modern science and Medical science tells that the will power of a person will make the healing process faster than the medicine.  Will-power help people to be healthy, get out and test new grounds, take risk, embark on new business or whatever they like and succeed.  Weakness can destroy immune system and susceptible for disease.

I really appreciate Vayanakkaaran and Andrew for their critical analysis and comment. It helps me to correct some of my follies improve and my translation.  I will be more cautious also next time.

Sincerely

G. Puthenkurish
