REEVE MATHEW, 10, DIES IN I-94 CRASH NEAR GURNEE
GURNEE, Ill. (WLS) --
A 10-year-old boy was killed when he and another child were
ejected from a car after it slammed into a median on I-94 in north suburban
Gurnee Saturday morning.
The vehicle involved in the crash was part of a group of church members headed
to a retreat in Wisconsin.
An 11-year-old boy was also ejected from the vehicle remains in serious
condition at Condell Medical Center
in Libertyville Saturday evening. Two other
adults taken to Vista Medical Center
in Waukegan are
also listed in serious condition.
"The aunt was driving and she started getting out of control," said
Deacon Jake Jacob, St. Mary's Knanaya Jacobite Syriac Orthodox Church.
Two people in the back seat were ejected from the rear window of the car.
Ten-year-old Reeve Mathew was killed instantly when his head struck the
concrete. The other child ejected was brought to Condell
Medical Center
in Libertyville in serious condition.
Seven people total were in the vehicle, and none of the others suffered
life-threatening injuries. After the crash the interstate remained closed for
several hours while police investigated.
Meanwhile, church members are mourning the loss of a child.
"Reeve was a God-fearing child," Deacon Jacob said. "He was only
10 years old and actually next week he was planning to be an altar boy in the
church, so he was planning for that and he was very active in the church.
Illinois State Police said the driver of the vehicle, 50-year-old Sylvia Jacob,
crossed four lanes of traffic before crashing into the median. Police have
cited her with improper lane usage.
